Most pets love to eat. If a whole day goes by and your pet still hasn’t eaten anything, it is time for you to do something. At The Goodland Pet Hospital in Goleta, our veterinarians can determine the cause of your pet’s refusal to eat.
Think About Their Last Few Days
The first thing you should do is think about what your pet has done for the last few days. Did they get into the trash? They might have eaten something that made them sick. You should also check their stools. If they have diarrhea, this could also be a reason that they have lost their appetite.
Perform a Quick Exam
You can do a quick exam to determine if there is something medically wrong. Start by pressing on their belly. They shouldn’t react to pain. If they do, they likely have an internal issue. You should also check the inside of their mouth. Your pet’s gums should be pink. If they are pale or dry, it is a sign of a medical condition. If you find something wrong, you should call your veterinarian right away.
Check Their Food
If you have recently changed your pet’s food, it could be the reason that they are refusing to eat. If they don’t like it, they won’t eat it. If not, check the food. If it smells or looks weird, it could have gone bad.
Call Your Veterinary Clinic
If you cannot find the source of your pet’s refusal to eat, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian. It is dangerous for your pet to go more than a few days without food. The sooner you get to the root of the problem, the better it will be for your pet.
